If you were to become angry with them and to lash out, you will be acting emotionally because of the hurt that you are feeling and you will most likely say something that you will regret.
Wait until some time has passed and then try to reconnect with your ex, if he or she still reacts in a hateful way, then allow some more time to pass because you contact your ex again.
Give your ex time to deal with the pain that they are dealing with, they may be stating that they hate you, but it could be that they are just trying to push the blame of this emotional hurt onto you.
